Q: What is WordPress?
A: WordPress is an open-source web publishing platform that allows users to create a website. Read more about WordPress at https://wordpress.org/about/.

Q: How do I use the Fermilab WordPress service?
A: Please read the Getting Started Guide. After your site is created, you can find more documentation in the administration area of your site.

Q: How do I request a WordPress site?
A:  Please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Service Desk web portal at https://servicedesk.fnal.gov and fill out the Web Hosting Request form.
  2. Select “WordPress SaaS website” from the web hosting platform pull-down list and fill out the form accordingly.

Q: What is a theme?
A:  A theme determines the overall layout and design of your site. The Fermilab WordPress service offers a Fermilab theme that you can use right away; more themes will be available in the future.

Q: What is a plugin?
A:  Plugins are tools used to extend the functionality of WordPress.

Q: Can I add new themes and plugins to my site?
A:  All the themes and plugins are centrally managed. If you want to use a new theme or plugin in your site, it needs to be reviewed and approved before we can install it on your site. This is to ensure that the new theme or plugin is compatible with our web infrastructure and that it is secure. Please read the Fermilab WordPress themes and plugins governance document at http://cd-docdb.fnal.gov/cgi-bin/ShowDocument?docid=5589 to find out what plugins/themes are allowed. To request a new theme or plugin, please submit a general request ticket.
